Fully Functional Swords

There are three basic categories of swords that exist; the purely decorative sword, the light duty sword and the fully functional sword, which is also known as the battle ready sword. These swords are made of different materials and use various methods in manufacture and therefore the cost varies. Decorative swords are often made from stainless steel and are highly decorated copies of swords used in movies, theatre and historical re-enactments. Some of these are acid treated to produce a rainbow effect in the blade. The decorative swords are just for decoration and not meant for use. 

The next category, light duty swords are commonly used for training and stage props. They have somewhat of an edge, but are not designed for actual combat. These types are also called costume swords and come with their own sheaths so that they can be used for theatre use.

The main characteristic that sets the functional sword apart from the other types of swords is the type of materials it is made from and the quality of workmanship. Fully functional swords are designed to be used and therefore are usually made from high carbon steel, with an edge that can be sharpened. If taken care of properly such swords will last for many years.

Sword collecting has been one of the hobbies and often passions of true collectors feature not only the look and feel of functional swords, but often the history plays a part as well. In the Orient, such swords are prized and their age is measured in centuries instead of mere years. It is a fact that any of the centuries old swords are still very capable of being used in battle, should the condition arise.

There are many replicas of historical types of swords made today, with different grades of steel and varying process of forging, either by hand or by machine. One of the most recognizable places for hand-forged swords is Toledo, Spain. The swords manufactured here are often replicas of original swords or fully functional swords made to custom order.  Traditionally, forging swords by hand is thought to produce the best swords for functioning in battle. This of course reduces the number of fully functional swords that can be produced because of the amount of time it takes.

It is important to remember that in the hands of a person trained to do so, any sword is fully functional. Swords, even those used for display are capable of causing great damage and harm to a person. One of the cardinal rules that apply to any weapon, functional sword or firearm is to treat them all with respect and remember they are not toys! Fully functional swords are designed to cut through flesh and bone, therefore it is important to remember that the original purpose is to cause harm.

Collecting swords and weaponry of any kind can be a fascinating hobby and it will enhance the collection if proper use and care of the swords is learned and practiced. Fully functional swords can be wonderful heirlooms to hand down to future generations and many of these swords are used for this purpose.
